How to measure your dog for a crate

Length

Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not the tip). Add 2-4 inches and round up to the next crate size. Your dog should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down fully stretched.

Height

Measure from the floor to the top of the head while sitting – or to the tip of the ears for upright-eared breeds like German Shepherds. Add 2-4 inches so your dog can sit without ducking.

Puppies

Buy the adult size and use a divider panel to shrink the space while your puppy is small. A crate that’s too big lets a puppy potty in one corner and sleep in another, which slows house-training. See is a dog crate too big? for more.

Which crate should you buy in that size?

Once you know your size, pick the build quality that fits your dog. For powerful chewers, escape artists, or anxious dogs, a heavy-duty Impact aluminum crate is worth it. For everyday use, a wire crate with a divider is the value pick. Compare them all on our best dog crates guide, or read the full crate sizing guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size dog crate do I need?

Measure your dog from nose to base of tail and add 2-4 inches for length, and from the floor to the top of the head (or ears for upright-eared breeds) and add 2-4 inches for height. Match that length to the next crate size up: 24″, 30″, 36″, 42″, 48″, or 54″.

What size crate for a 70 lb dog?

Most 70 lb dogs (Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer) fit a 42″ crate. Tall or long dogs at that weight may need a 48″.

What size crate for a 90 lb or 100 lb dog?

Dogs around 90-110 lb (German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman) typically need a 48″ crate. Giant breeds over 110 lb (Great Dane, Mastiff) need a 54″ or larger heavy-duty crate.

Is it bad if the crate is too big?

For puppies, yes – a crate that is too big lets them potty in one corner and sleep in another, which slows house-training. Use a divider panel and expand it as the puppy grows. For house-trained adults, a little extra room is fine.

Should I size the crate for my puppy or its adult size?

Buy for the adult size and use a divider to shrink the usable space while the puppy is small. This saves you from buying multiple crates.
