How We Test & Review Dog Gear
No product earns a recommendation here by being popular or by paying us. This is exactly how we research, vet, score and keep our picks honest — start to finish.
Radical transparency, on purpose
My Little & Large is an independent, reader-supported review site for dog gear — we don’t sell anything. Because we earn a commission when you buy through our links, you deserve to know exactly how we choose what to recommend. So here it is, in full.
Every pick runs the same five-step gauntlet
From first research to the buy button you click — nothing skips a step.
We start with real demand & real owners
Before we form an opinion, we map what owners are actually buying and asking. We study the search demand and the questions people raise, then read and synthesize hundreds of verified owner reviews per category — looking for the patterns that hold up across months of real use, not a handful of glowing day-one ratings.
We verify the build & the fit
We confirm every claim against the manufacturer, not the listicle: materials and construction, weight limits and load ratings, wattage and R‑values on heated and solar dog houses, cord and chew safety, and especially the size charts. We obsess over fit for large and giant breeds, where “one size fits most” quietly falls apart.
We get hands-on where we can
Gear we own is used in the real world, photographed, and judged first-hand — how a clip holds under a hard puller, whether a latch defeats an escape artist, how a bed survives a big dog and a wash cycle. When a pick is research-backed rather than something we’ve handled ourselves, we say so plainly.
We allow only in-stock listings and real photos
Every buy link is checked live before we publish, and product images are the actual product — never an AI-generated mock-up. If a model sells out or is discontinued, we repoint the link or swap the pick. No dead buttons, no “currently unavailable” dead ends.
We score, publish & keep updating
Each product earns a score, the guide is edited for accuracy, and then it goes on our update rota. Stock and prices drift and better products launch, so we re-check links and revisit picks on a rolling basis and date our updates so you know how current a recommendation is.
How the 1–100 score is built
Each product earns a final score from 1 to 100, weighted across three things: the volume of real owner reviews, the quality and consistency of what those owners report over time, and our own assessment of build, fit and value. A flashy launch with no track record doesn’t out-rank a proven workhorse — durability and real-world fit do the heavy lifting.
What we will never do
The promises that keep our reviews worth trusting.
We will never…
- Sell or ship products, or take your payment — we’re a review site, not a store
- Accept payment from a brand for a placement, a higher score, or a softer review
- Use AI-generated or stock images in place of the real product photo
- Link to out-of-stock or “currently unavailable” listings
- Give veterinary, medical or nutrition advice — we review gear, not health
- Publish AI-written reviews or outsourced content-farm filler
How we make money — honestly
My Little & Large is reader-supported. When you buy through one of our links we may earn a small commission from the retailer — as an Amazon Associate and through Skimlinks partner brands — at no extra cost to you. The line we never cross: commissions never decide our recommendations. We choose and rank on merit first, then route the buy button to the retailer that’s in stock at a fair price. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
